Nile Special Beach Rugby Carnival is a much awaited event that takes place every year. This event gives the well-renowned rugby players the ultimate chance to interact with the people especially their fans. The players actually get an opportunity to relax and take a break every year from the competitive rugby season.
The 7th edition of this carnival is taking place on the 4th of October, 2014. The venue for the event is Sport Beach Entebbe.
When Uganda Rugby Union had rescheduled the rugby season last year, the Nile Special Beach Rugby Carnival could not take place. However, this year it is taking place due to the sponsorship help received from IAA (International Air Ambulance) and Nile Breweries.
Ten rugby teams are going to be associated with this one-day tournament namely- Team Odong, Team Kimono, Team Mudoola, Team Tialata, Team Aredo, Team Adnan, Team Wandicho, Team Wazeyi, Team Wokos and Team Buloti.
The rugby team which will win the tournament shall receive one million Uganda shillings. The teams that stand in the second and third position are going to receive 750,000 Uganda shillings and 500,000 Uganda shillings respectively.
Each and every team will be constituted by a minimum of 4 rugby fans and two of them will be female fans. Fans have been selected on the basis of a competition that was conducted with the help of social media websites like Twitter and Facebook.
This edition of the carnival has actually been successful in attracting musical artists like Daniel Kigozi (who has won the PAM Award five times) and Cinderella Sanyu (who has won Diva Awards). Along with that celebrities such as A-Pass and Peter Miles are also going to perform at the carnival.
Therefore the Nile Special Beach Rugby Carnival 2014 is surely going to be a fun-filled event for everyone connected to it.
The Surrey based English Rugby union club, London Irish is riding high on their recent success in the Aviva Premiership. They have been able to repeat their best performance of the 2008-09 seasons this time around by reaching the finals of the premiership. The celebrated players of the club put up a great show in order to send their club into the final game of the season. Scott Steele, Simon Hunt and Declan Williams scored two tries each as the London Irish club defeated their rivals Bath. It was a spirited performance as the team clawed back from a 7-19 deficit to a 24-19 win. The supporters were vociferous enough to let their heroes know the huge satisfaction they got from their team’s spirited performance. Players like Steele, Mat Turner, Hunt and Williams all touched down for the exiles leading to huge cheers from the spectators present. It was a befitting semi final for the premiership which has witnessed a number of close encounters.
The second game of the night was played between Bath and Gloucester. Steele and Hunt scored two consecutive tries of the evening. Cam Cowell and Paddy O’Grady crossed the whitewash. The scoreline stood at 29-14. London Irish side led by their Academy Director Nick Kennedy will now be competing in next Friday’s final at Twickenham Stoop and face off against the upbeat Bath side. The captain of the side Ollie Curry was very much confident of his side’s success as he believes the mixture of young talent and experienced players will provide his side an edge over their rivals. The fans are looking forward to their side’s success in Friday’s final. The onus of providing the silver lining to their campaign lies in the hands of the players. This will be their first major title after the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series title in 2012.
Rugby is one of the most popular sports in the country of Kenya. The people of the country are often plagued by several domestic and international problems but still find within them the spirit to enjoy sports. A team game like rugby helps a lot in the all round development of individuals. Beach Rugby has also come of age in the country. A number of clubs have been set up in the provinces which nurture new talent. However the major aim is to promote the spirit of the game. The Watamu five a side Beach Rugby that concluded recently proved to be a huge success among the players as well as the fans.
The final was played between the Masaku Rugby team and Mombasa Technical University at the Garoda Beach resort in Kilfy County. The special guests of the night included Kilfy county governor Amason Kingi. A huge number of spectators turned out for the event and voiced their support for their respective teams. Masaku won the match by demolishing the team representing the university as the score line stood at 20-5. Samuel Muregi and Kevin Macharia were the first two players to score ten points from their try attempts. Macharia was the star performer although his efforts were given some resistance by Kevin Omondi. Macharia became the top scorer of the tournament with a spectacular hat trick which put him on the same position as Joakim Mwasi of the Shaxx team. The semi final matches were convincingly won by both sides with Masaku defeating Gede and MTU beating Malindi.
Sharks lifted the Shield Cup and Shaxx emerged as the winners in the Bowl Final. The Beach Rugby event received great impetus as Airtel and Standard Group limited became the official sponsors. An exhibition match was also played between Airtel and the media team and the Kilfy County Assembly.
