Gloucester have suffered a defeat in the hands of Newcastle falcons, falling 31-19 to see an end to their Anglo-Welsh Cup campaign. Newcastle entered the game with all to play for following Bath’s victory over Ospreys on Friday.
Bath’s victory meant Gloucester could not continue at the Anglo-Welsh Cup. Hence, Newcastle sought the victory more and got it to get the bonus point required to book their semi final berth.

Gloucester led in the eighth minute through Big Ben and Little Ben. Ben Morgan ran down the blindside, creating a two on one and giving Ben Vellacott a clear run to the line for a try. Newcastle gave an instant response through hooker Kyle Cooper. Toby Flood added extras before going off due to head injury, with Joel Hodgson coming on as replacement.

Cooper proved key in the first half, scoring from close range to help Newcastle to the lead before playing a part by punching through the opponent’s defence for Mark Wilson to score. Hodgson converted two tries, helping Newcastle to a 21-7 lead within 30 minutes of play.

Gareth Evans helped Newcastle leave the first half with a bang by scoring a try three minutes before halftime, with Williams converting. After the break, Newcastle won their bonus points early in the half as VerenekiGoneva, Josh Matavesi and Alex Tait combined to score. Hodgson played another influential role in the half to help Newcastle to 31-14 lead. Gloucester looked towards 18-year old Academy stars Aaron Hinkley and Tom Seabrook to help them while the youngsters got their senior debut.

Newcastle has a unique opportunity of reaching the final except Leicester score 13 tries against Wasps when they meet on Sunday.
