Dean Richards, the Director of Rugby of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Newcastle Falcons has blasted the referee following his side’s 18-0 defeat at the hands of the Northampton Saints during the club’s Aviva Premiership encounter this weekend.
Having seen his side get the raw end of the whistle on several occasions as the Falcons suffered a defeat by two tries to none and the boss was visibly upset with the one way pattern in which the penalties were handed.
And according to most rugby critics and experts, Richards certainly had a point in his rant. In the first half itself, referee Richards, who was the designated match official, penalized the Falcons almost off the park during a period when the away team was heroically defending their own scoring area.
And the Newcastle Falcons stated that he thought his players were absolutely fantastic on the day, adding that they had their backs against the wall in the first half thanks to some very poor decisions from the referee. He also hailed the performance of the boys in defense, adding that it was nothing short of heroic.
He also blasted the assistant referees in the match adding that they needed to be looked at as well because it is not possible for them to come to conclusions that they have come to.
And despite having no score on the board to show for their efforts, the Newcastle Falcons came away from the match with a lot of credit against a Northampton Saints side that was bolstered by the return of almost all their stars from England duty. And Richards will have plenty to look forward to in the future if his players can replicate performances that they showed against the England internationals on the books of the Saints.
